NITROX - Mixed Gas Diving
Subsurface Fiji was the first dive shop to introduce Nitrox into Fiji. Since its introduction, Subsurface and its staff have gained much valuable experience in Nitrox diving. Subsurface staff dive using Nitrox, which we believe leaves our instructors and dive masters a far healthier and astute team of professional divers.
What is Nitrox?
Nitrox is a Mixed Gas of Oxygen Enriched Air between 23% oxygen and 50% oxygen.
The air that we breath is approximately 20% oxygen and 80% nitrogen. A large percentage of nitrogen which is absorbed into the body tissues at depth can cause two major problems. Narcosis and decompression illness. DCI, while not a common problem, does however, almost always leave permanent damage. One way to reduce this risk is to raise the oxygen percentage, hence lowering the nitrogen concentration in the tissues.
The advantages are:
Longer no deco limits. For example:
| Depth |
Padi Limit |
Nitrox Best Mix Limit |
| 20 m |
45 mins |
219 mins |
| 26 m |
20 mins |
56 mins |
| 32 m |
14 mins |
27 mins |
It is possible not only to extend your bottom time dramatically, but also to keep further away from your limits.
- Reduced Narcosis
- Reduced Post Diving Fatigue
- Better gas consumption (10% plus)
- Up to 50 times cleaner than standard air.
- Additional safety with flying times and altitude diving.
